Gender-Affirming Care Resources in California

In California, gender-affirming care is protected under state law despite federal efforts to block or ban care for transgender youth. In partnership with the California LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network and our national partners, this page brings together key resources and information to support individuals, providers, and advocates in navigating access to care.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued further guidance on gender-affirming care for transgender youth in California, outlining the protections available for medical providers and patients seeking care, as well as the obligations for insurers and health plans. This resource provides clear information regarding said legal protections and obligations available under California law.

The Transgender Records Act

SB 59, also known as The Transgender Records Act, is a new California law (effective July 1, 2026) that protects the privacy of transgender and nonbinary people who change their name and/or gender marker through the courts by making their records confidential.
