We at #TeamTFSS have officially decided to deactivate our Twitter. This decision comes after too many months of violent hate speech, anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, and the scaling back of protections for trans people on this platform. Elon Musk has reinstated various banned anti-LGBTQ+ influencers; removed the policy on hateful conduct that includes misgendering and deadnaming trans users; and now considers the repeated use of “cis” as cause for suspension—all under the guise of “free speech.” During a time when anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation is at an all-time high, engaging on an app that prioritizes “free speech” in this way only boosts the voices of people who are anti-LGBTQ+, anti-Black, and antisemitic.
Because we stand so firm in our values, we refuse to allow our engagement on this app to uphold everything that we are fighting against. Fostering a safe environment for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people is the bare minimum of what we expect on social media, and Twitter is no longer providing that space for us. Because this platform no longer aligns with our mission and values, #TeamTFSS is going to focus our efforts on uplifting the voices of our community in spaces that better protect us from harm.
