Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of US v. Skrmetti and this decision will go down in history—not because it upheld justice, but because it denied it.

In a devastating decision, the Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth. This ruling has far-reaching implications not just on access to life-saving medical care—it sets a dangerous precedent for the ways trans rights, healthcare rights, and the very notion of equal protection under the law are treated in this country.

We are heartbroken. We are outraged. And we are deeply concerned for the trans youth and families now left more vulnerable than ever.

This decision will cause real harm. It will embolden states to further criminalize essential care, create confusion and fear for providers, and, most tragically, it will send a message to trans youth that their safety and wellbeing is negotiable.

Let us be perfectly clear: It is not.

Medical care for trans youth is not experimental. It is evidence-based, life-saving, and endorsed by every major medical organization. No court ruling can change that truth.

Further, no court ruling can change the fact that we are still here. And we are not going anywhere, no matter how hard they fight to undermine our existence.

We want every trans youth, parent, caregiver, and loved one reading this to know: You are not alone. We are in this with you. And more than that, you are surrounded by a community that refuses to back down.

The road ahead will not be easy. But we have faced cruelty and injustice before. Every time, we come back stronger—because we protect each other. We lift one another up. We fight not just for survival, but for a future where autonomy and care are treated as the non-negotiable human rights they are.

This decision does not end the fight. It reignites our efforts and our commitment to each and every one of you.

We will continue to work at every level—organizing on the front lines, educating across the board, advocating within the government, and supporting youth and families directly—to ensure that no trans youth is ever left behind.

We know how to take care of each other when the system fails us. And we will continue to do just that.

“This ruling is a devastating setback for transgender youth and their families. It places politics above medical expertise and strips parents of their right to make essential healthcare decisions. At TransFamily Support Services, we will not stop fighting to protect our youth and affirm their right to thrive.” Kathie Moehlig (she/her) Executive Director – TransFamily Support Services
